Podophyllin VS Podophyllotoxin
Podophyllin and podophyllotoxin are both derived from the same plant source, but they differ in their composition and usage.
1. Podophyllin: It is a crude resin extracted from the roots of the Podophyllum plant. It contains various compounds, including podophyllotoxin, but also other related compounds. Podophyllin is traditionally used topically as a caustic agent to treat genital warts and other skin lesions. However, its crude nature and potential for skin irritation have led to the development of more refined alternatives like podophyllotoxin.
2. Podophyllotoxin: This is a purified compound derived from podophyllin. It is the active ingredient responsible for the therapeutic effects of podophyllin. Podophyllotoxin is more selectively cytotoxic and less irritating to the skin compared to podophyllin. It's commonly used in topical formulations for the treatment of genital warts and other skin conditions due to its antiviral and antimitotic properties.
In summary, podophyllotoxin is a refined version of the active compound found in podophyllin, offering a more targeted and less irritating treatment option for various skin conditions.
